This is a report from CTV news on the disparity between the number of Canadians waiting for an organ transplant and the number of organ donations. Unfortunately, the distance between the two numbers is growing and the biggest imbalance is with kidney transplants.
What can be done about this situation? I’m glad that there are fewer tragic deaths compared to many other parts of the world, even if that means fewer donor organs are available from the deceased. But, if more of us considered that the last thing and the best thing we could do with ourselves is to register to donate our organs and tissues available upon our death, then the increasing gap between need and availability could be reversed.
